It is uncertain for what purpose this batik was made. Because of the vertical design configuration and specific color combination (which is usually restricted for mourning) it was possibly used to cover a coffin. The piece was acquired from the descendents of Chinese peranakan woman from East Java who was a concubine in the court of Surakarta.
